![]() ![]() That might make it tough for them to headline a rom-com or an action franchise, but perfect for Netflix, where users searching for their favorite Robert Redford film to watch might happen upon something new instead-and become loyal, lifelong subscribers in the process. But as Deadline points out, between this and the Fonda/ Robert Redford film Our Souls at Night, also in the works, Netflix isn’t just committing to big-name stars, but stars whose box office clout peaked several decades ago. ![]() Unlike Grace and Frankie, the comedy series starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin that was recently renewed for a third season, Divanation wouldn’t be a long-term commitment for the actresses-and given that Hawn hasn’t appeared in a film since 2002, that’s probably the best way to get on board. ![]() The streaming giant now plans to reunite Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn, co-stars in 1995’s The First Wives Club, for the film Divanation, about a singing group reuniting for the first time in 30 years after a bitter split. If every scene had been given that much care, we’d have gotten a comic masterpiece instead of just a pretty funny gimmick flick.Netflix still doesn’t release their ratings numbers, but we may have just gotten the best possible proof that Grace and Frankie-and anything else they’re programming for older audiences-is a big hit. This planning seems to have brought out the best in Abrahams, forced him to consider nuances he would otherwise have overlooked. Since the scene makes extensive use of doubles and trick photography, it probably had to be planned far more precisely than any other section of the movie. The rhythms of this sequence are amazingly right, and there’s probably a technical reason for that. Once they figure out what has happened, the action spills out of the restroom, where their unexpected doubleness proceeds to shock everyone who sees them. This begins in a restroom, where the twins initially mistake each other for their images in a mirror. One sequence that comes off hilariously is the big revelation scene in which the Bettes and the Lilys confront each other. Clever idea, but the editing and staging need to be cleaner to produce the desired laugh. Another missed opportunity: Someone who knows the haughty City Bette sees Country Bette singing with some street musicians and, thinking she’s the other one, is astounded. Fine, but the presentation of the payoff scene is wobbly, and the joke is mostly lost. In one bit, for example, Country Bette learns how to behave like a corporation executive by watching Joan Collins on Dynasty. They have distinctly different comic styles, with the formers. Potentially, the film is a fine Swiss watch, but the co-creator of Airplane! and Ruthless People isn’t used to working meticulously enough. Big Business is a shrill, unattractive comedy which stars Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin, who play two sets of twins mixed up at birth. What makes Big Business look smaller is director Abrahams’ inexact timing. City Lily, who’s more fluttery, gets fewer laughs, but has a compensatory sweetness. (In stereo, of course.)Īs for Tomlin (All of Me), her country-mouse character is the funnier of the two she plays: Country Lily curls her fingers into fangs and hisses like a serpent when she thinks someone’s trying to bamboozle her. The relatively unusual gambit of teaming two female stars, which succeeded with Midler and Shelley Long in Outrageous Fortune, is again attempted here. (That was a little easier to understand, wasn’t it?) They meet when the Country Bette and Country Lily come to Manhattan to protest the sale of a Jupiter Hollow furniture company by a conglomerate headed by the City Bette and City Lily. One Bette-Lily pair is raised in New York City, one pair is raised in a dogpatch called Jupiter Hollow. 2 is the city mouse/country mouse business. Comedy Drama Music A privileged rich debutante and a cynical struggling entertainer share a turbulent, but strong childhood friendship over the years. Through a hospital mix-up, each Bette twin is paired with a Lily twin, and then each Bette-Lily pair is presented to a different set of parents. Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin each play a set. This scene from Big Business was always my favou. Big Business, which is scheduled to open nationwide today, has enough of them for several movies. Bette Midler starred in a number of 80s movies, Ruthless People & Beaches are available in our online store. A lot of movies have some sort of gimmick. Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin - the first ladies of laughter - star in this critically acclaimed box office hit about two sets of identical twins who are mismatched at birth. ![]()
